The SM5 helmet has been designed to provide MX riders with a safe and specially designed helmet for optimal protection and comfort. The lightweight SM5 helmet features a thermoinjected shell that incorporates a special polymer blend enhanced by varying degrees of thickness that is designed to offer the optimal combination of impact protection and lightweight, while the five density EPS lining ensures the correct density in the correct area for better impact absorption.
A raised area engineered with padding effectively reduces the forces transmitted to the collarbone and a patented visor release system that ensures that the visor is released with the correct amount of force predetermined, regardless of the angle of impact.
The lightweight outer shell is made with a technologically advanced impact resistant thermoplastic in three anatomical shell sizes, plus three individual sizes of EPS lining with a combination of inner lining and cheek padding to offer 6 unique sizes and to ensure the best fit and protection.
Revised the volume of the lower shell medium, large, XL and 2XL to be wider by about 3% to make the helmet easier to wear and take off, where the increase in helmet volume has also improved impact management performance which is now 44% lower than the normal speed threshold.
For the new ECE 22.06 standard, the SM5 achieves an impact score at normal speed 44% better than the current figure of 33%, as well as a linear impact score 32% better at low speed and 31% better at high speed than the prevailing standard.
Internal and external surfaces are designed to minimize the effects of oblique impacts. To help combat and mitigate those rotational impact forces, Alpinestars has designed another proprietary technology by creating a low-friction surface on the inner surface of the EPS coating. For the ECE 22.06 standard, which now includes the assessment of the oblique rotational impact, the SM5 gets a score of 70% according to the new regulation.
